  • The announced M6 Mac mini starts at 16GB of unified memory and tops out at 32GB.

What changed in the Mac mini between 2020 and 2026?

1The M6 is Apple’s first 2nm Mac chip.

2The M4 in 2024 used second-generation 3nm technology with 28 billion transistors.

3The M1 in 2020 was built on 5nm with 16 billion transistors.

4The announced M6 has a 12-core CPU (2 super + 4P + 6E).

5The M1 Mac mini in 2020 had an 8-core CPU (4P + 4E).

6The announced entry M6 Mac mini starts at 256GB of SSD storage, configurable to 2TB.

7The M1 Mac mini in 2020 also started at 256GB, configurable to the same 2TB.

8The announced M6 Mac mini starts at 16GB of unified memory, configurable to 32GB.

9The announced M6 Mac mini ships with 2.5Gb Ethernet as standard, configurable to 10Gb.

10The M1, M2 and M4 Mac mini all shipped Gigabit Ethernet as standard, so 2026 is the first time the base figure moved.

11That makes the announced M6’s standard Ethernet 2.5x the Gigabit every previous Apple silicon Mac mini shipped with, while the 10Gb ceiling has been configurable since 2020 and has not moved.

12The announced 2026 Mac mini moves to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, from Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 on the M4.

The table below starts at the M1, and the full run of every Mac mini model by year reaches back further.

Why memory bandwidth decides how fast a local model runs

Token generation on a local model is usually limited by how fast memory can feed the chip, not by how fast the chip computes. That makes bandwidth, not core count, the specification that separates these machines for AI work.

13The announced M6 Mac mini has up to 170GB/s of unified memory bandwidth.

14The M4 in the Mac mini had 120GB/s, so the announced M6 is 41.7% higher.

15The M4 Pro in 2024 already had 273GB/s, above the announced M6.

16The announced M5 Pro Mac mini has 307GB/s, roughly 1.8x the M6.

17The M2 Mac mini in 2023 had 100GB/s.

18The M2 Pro in 2023 had 200GB/s.

19Apple says M6 memory bandwidth is up 10% over the M5 and 2.5x over the M1.

Unified memory bandwidth of the base Mac mini by generation: 100 GB/s on the M2, 120 on the M4, 170 announced for the M6

The cheapest 2026 Mac mini has less memory bandwidth than the M4 Pro Apple shipped in 2024. For running an LLM locally on a Mac, that gap matters more than the newer chip name.

Which models actually fit in 16GB and 32GB?

Measured on a Mac Mini M4 16GB: Llama 3.1 8B fits at 5.6GB, and Phi-4 14B is the largest model that runs in practice, at 9.2GB

Rentamac-Original

Every figure below was measured on our own Mac Mini M4 hardware running macOS 15.5 in July 2026, not taken from a spec sheet. It transfers to the M6 in one direction only: the announced M6 carries the same 16GB base and 32GB maximum as the M4, so what FITS is the same, while speed is not, because Apple states the M6 is faster.

20Phi-4 14B (Q4_K_M) is the largest model that runs in practice on a 16GB Mac mini, at 13.8 tokens/sec.

21That model occupies a 9.2GB memory footprint, measured on a Mac Mini M4 16GB.

22Llama 3.1 8B (Q4_K_M) peaks at 5.6GB, which leaves headroom on a 16GB machine.

23Llama 3.1 8B (Q4_K_M) generates at 32.4 tokens/sec on a Mac Mini M4 16GB.

24The same model on the MLX backend reaches 41.2 tokens/sec.

25Prompt processing on that setup runs at 1,150 tokens/sec.

26Time to first token is 480ms.

27Whisper large-v3-turbo transcribes at 8.1x realtime on the same machine.

28That turbo model scores a 7.7% word error rate, against 7.4% for full large-v3.

How much more expensive is the M6 Mac mini, really?

29The M6 Mac mini’s $899 starting price is 50.1% above the $599 the M4 Mac mini launched at in October 2024.

30Measured against the $799 the M4 was actually selling for in July 2026, the same machine is 12.5% more.

We calculated both from published prices: $899 against the $599 launch price is 50.1%, and $899 against the $799 shelf price is 12.5%.

Neither figure is wrong. They answer different questions, which is why publishing one without the other produces a misleading headline.

31The M6 Mac mini was announced at a $899 US starting price.

32The M4 Mac mini launched at $599 in October 2024.

33By late July 2026, the M4 Mac mini’s entry price had reached $799.

Three bars showing Mac mini prices: $599 at the M4 launch in 2024, $799 in July 2026, $899 for the announced M6

Apple repriced the M4 line twice before the M6 existed, against a global memory-chip shortage.

34Apple raised the Mac mini’s entry price from $599 to $799 in May 2026.

35The M4 Pro Mac mini went from $1,399 to $1,599 in June 2026.

36Mac prices rose roughly 15-20% across the line during the 2026 memory shortage.

37The M5 Pro Mac mini was announced at a $1,699 US starting price.

Mid-cycle increases like these feed into whether Apple hardware is worth it in 2026: what you pay depends on when in a generation you buy, not only on which generation.

Does the M6’s 32GB memory ceiling push you to the M5 Pro?

The M6’s 32GB ceiling, stated above, is the specification that decides the tier for anyone loading a large model into unified memory.

What our own measurements say about the ceiling is in the section above. What follows is Apple’s published specification for hardware nobody has tested yet.

38The announced M5 Pro Mac mini starts at 24GB of unified memory, configurable to 64GB.

39The announced M5 Pro has 307GB/s of unified memory bandwidth, against the M6’s stated up to 170GB/s.

40The M5 Pro starts at 512GB of storage and configures to 8TB.

41Its processor is a 15-core CPU (5 super + 10P).

42In Apple’s own testing, the M6 Mac mini is up to 4.8x faster than the M4 Mac mini at LLM prompt processing in LM Studio.

43Apple says the M5 Pro Mac mini is up to 4x faster than the M4 Pro at the same task.

44Thunderbolt 5 on the M5 Pro runs at up to 120Gb/s and supports clustering several Mac mini systems.

45The M5 Pro carries a 16-core Neural Engine.
